Caring Health Center
Culture and Health Literacy

In September 2006 Caring Health Center received funding through a University of Arizona grant from the National Cancer Institute to research the impact of cultural differences and health literacy on chronic disease outcomes. Health literacy is defined as the ability of a patient to understand and act on a medical provider’s instructions.

The study focuses on patients from four ethnic groups, including immigrants, who have been diagnosed with diabetes or hypertension.  Caring Health Center hopes to use the information learned in this study to develop programs and services that provide better and more appropriate care for our patients.
